Anaerobic digestion describes a collection of processes wherein microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen. This process is used industrially and domestically to both manage waste and produce fuels. With the increased demand for renewable energy and the increasing number of economic programs supporting renewable energy forms, anaerobic waste treatment processes are becoming a viable solution for treating organic waste streams. Depending on factors such as process selected, end market regulatory allowances, and utilization capacity, resultant digestives may need to undergo further treatment to be acceptable for reuse.
